8 Days Calving Season Safari in Tanzania

OVERVIEW

This 8-day Tanzania safari is specially crafted around the Calving Season — a magical time between late January and early March when over 8,000 baby wildebeest are born each day in the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu region. It’s not only a spectacle of new life but also a thrilling time for predator action as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas hover nearby. This safari takes you through Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and into the heart of Ndutu for a front-row seat to nature’s most tender and dramatic moments.

Ideal for wildlife photographers, adventure seekers, and nature lovers, this itinerary focuses on authentic wildlife experiences, cultural interactions, and unforgettable landscapes.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha – Gateway to Northern Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your private safari guide and transferred to Arusha. Spend the rest of the day relaxing after your international flight or explore the city with optional excursions like the local market or Cultural Heritage Centre. Your accommodation is arranged independently for a restful evening before the adventure begins.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its large elephant herds and giant baobab trees. This less-crowded park offers a wonderful introduction to Tanzania’s landscapes and wildlife. You’ll enjoy a full-day game drive, spotting lions, zebras, impalas, and the park’s iconic elephants. Enjoy a scenic picnic lunch before continuing your drive. In the evening, transfer to your selected lodge or tented camp near Tarangire (accommodation arranged separately).

Day 3: Tarangire to Lake Manyara or Karatu

Today, take a relaxed game drive as you exit Tarangire and head toward Karatu, a town nestled in the green highlands. Optionally, visit Lake Manyara National Park en route — a park known for its flamingos and famous tree-climbing lions. The afternoon may include a cultural visit to a local village or coffee farm. Settle in for the evening at your own pre-booked accommodation in Karatu.

Day 4: Karatu to Ndutu Area (Southern Serengeti)

This morning, head into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and journey on toward the Ndutu Plains, part of the Southern Serengeti ecosystem. During Calving Season, this area becomes the central stage for wildlife drama — with vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and lurking predators. Enjoy an afternoon game drive before settling into your accommodation near Ndutu.

Day 5 & Day 6: Full Days in Ndutu – Calving Season Magic

Spend two unforgettable days exploring Ndutu during the peak of the Great Migration’s calving season. The plains are alive with thousands of newborn wildebeest, making it one of the best times for predator-prey interactions. Witness cheetah chases, lions on the prowl, and hyena clans patrolling the grasslands. Your expert guide will help you track the migration and find the best vantage points. Enjoy both morning and afternoon game drives, with the flexibility to have a picnic lunch in the bush.

Day 7: Ndutu to Ngorongoro Crater – Wildlife in a Natural Wonder

After breakfast, drive back toward the Ngorongoro Crater, descending into one of Africa’s richest wildlife areas. The Crater is home to an incredible density of animals, including the endangered black rhino. Enjoy a game drive and a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, then ascend and return to Karatu for your final night (accommodation on your own).

Day 8: Karatu to Arusha – Departure

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and begin your drive back to Arusha, with optional stops along the way for last-minute souvenirs or scenic views. Your safari ends with a drop-off at Kilimanjaro International Airport or your hotel, depending on your travel plans.
